Management of Dental Anxiety in Midtdown Toronto
CONSCIOUS SEDATION
We understand dental work can sometimes be unpleasant and some patients may have anxiety with certain treatments. We offer in office conscious sedation to help reduce dental anxiety. Patients breathe in a safe and odourless gas that may help relieve any stress the dental office may bring.
We also provide patients with VR glasses to help pass the time and act as a distraction from the work being performed.
The dentists are also very kind and gently , taking time with patients. We book extra time so we can talk and explain procedures to help relieve dental anxiety.
Relax with Conscious Sedation: Nitrous Oxide
At Midtown Toronto Dentistry, we believe your comfort is just as important as your clinical care. For patients who feel anxious or uneasy about dental procedures, we offer Nitrous Oxide, commonly known as "laughing gas."
What is Nitrous Oxide?
Nitrous oxide is a safe and effective sedative agent that is mixed with oxygen and inhaled through a small mask that fits over your nose. It is called "conscious sedation" because it helps you relax without putting you to sleep. You will remain awake and able to respond to our team throughout the procedure.
How It Works & What It Feels Like
The process is simple and fast-acting. As you breathe in the gas, you will begin to feel its effects within minutes. Most patients describe the sensation as:
-
A feeling of lightness or floating.
-
A pleasant "tingling" in the arms and legs.
-
A sense of deep calm and well-being.
-
A generalized "numbness" to the sounds and sights of the dental office.
Safety and Recovery
Nitrous oxide is one of the safest sedatives used in dentistry. It is non-allergenic and the depth of sedation can be adjusted easily by your dentist. One of its greatest benefits is that it wears off almost immediately once the gas is turned off and you breathe pure oxygen for a few minutes. Because it leaves your system so quickly, most patients are able to drive themselves home or return to work right after their appointment.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is nitrous oxide safe for children?
Yes, it is highly recommended for children who are nervous or have trouble staying still. It is a very safe way to ensure they have a positive experience at the dentist.
Are there any side effects?
Side effects are rare. Some patients may experience mild nausea if they have a very heavy meal immediately before their appointment. We generally recommend a light snack a few hours prior.
Will I be "out of it" after my appointment? Not at all. Unlike oral or IV sedation, the effects of nitrous oxide do not linger. Once the mask is removed and you breathe regular air, you will feel completely back to normal within minutes.
Can I use VR glasses with sedation? Absolutely! At Midtown Toronto Dentistry, we often pair nitrous oxide with our VR glasses to provide a fully immersive, relaxing distraction while we work on your smile.
How do I know if I’m a candidate for laughing gas?
Most patients are excellent candidates. However, we will review your medical history first. It may not be recommended for patients who are pregnant, have certain respiratory conditions, or have a blocked nasal passage.
