EXTRACTIONS

Unfortunately, sometimes a tooth just can't be saved and needs to come out. We will ensure you are as comfortable as possible throughout this procedure and help you along your recovery.

 What Is a Dental Extraction?

A dental extraction is the removal of a tooth from the mouth. Dentists recommend extractions when a tooth is severely damaged, infected, or cannot be repaired with treatments such as fillings, crowns, or root canal therapy.

At Midtown Toronto Dentistry, we always try to preserve natural teeth whenever possible. However, when a tooth cannot be saved, removing it can relieve pain and protect the surrounding teeth and gums from further complications.

Dental extractions are a routine dental procedure and are typically completed quickly and comfortably using local anesthesia.

When Is a Tooth Extraction Necessary?

There are several situations where a tooth extraction may be recommended.

Common reasons include:

• severe tooth decay
• advanced gum disease
• cracked or broken teeth that cannot be repaired
• infections that have damaged the tooth structure
• overcrowding before orthodontic treatment
• impacted or problematic wisdom teeth

In some cases, removing a damaged tooth can prevent infection from spreading and help maintain overall oral health.

What Happens During a Tooth Extraction?

Before the extraction, the dentist will examine the tooth and surrounding bone using digital X-rays. This helps determine the safest and most effective way to remove the tooth.

The procedure usually involves the following steps:

  1. The area around the tooth is numbed using local anesthesia.

  2. The tooth is gently loosened using specialized dental instruments.

  3. The tooth is carefully removed.

  4. Gauze is placed to help control bleeding and encourage clot formation.

 Recovery After a Tooth Extraction

Healing after a dental extraction usually takes a few days.

Patients may experience mild soreness or swelling, which can typically be managed with over-the-counter pain medication and rest.

Helpful recovery tips include:

• avoid drinking through a straw for 24 hours
• eat soft foods for the first day or two
• avoid smoking during healing
• follow all post-treatment instructions provided by your dentist

Most patients are able to return to normal activities within a short period of time.

 Replacing a Missing Tooth

After a tooth extraction, replacing the missing tooth may be recommended to maintain proper bite alignment and prevent surrounding teeth from shifting.

Common replacement options include:

• dental implants
• dental bridges
• partial dentures

During your visit, our team can discuss which option is most appropriate for your needs.
