ROOT CANAL

Occasionally a tooth's nerve will die or become irreversibly inflamed. When this happens, sometimes a root canal is the best option to save the tooth. These are done by opening a little hole in the top of the tooth and using little files to remove the necrotic or inflamed nerve tissue, the tooth is disinfected and then filled with a rubber material to seal the area in and prevent future infection.

What Is Root Canal Treatment?

Root canal treatment is a dental procedure used to treat infection or inflammation inside a tooth.

Inside each tooth is a soft tissue called the pulp, which contains nerves and blood vessels. If this tissue becomes infected due to deep decay, cracks, or injury, root canal treatment may be necessary to save the tooth.

The procedure removes the infected pulp, cleans the inside of the tooth, and seals it to prevent further infection.

Signs You May Need a Root Canal

Some common symptoms that may indicate the need for root canal treatment include:

• persistent tooth pain
• sensitivity to hot or cold
• swelling or tenderness in the gums
• discoloration of the tooth
• pain when chewing or biting

In some cases, infection may be present without obvious symptoms, which is why regular dental exams are important.

What Happens During a Root Canal?

Root canal treatment is typically completed in one or two appointments.

The dentist begins by numbing the tooth and surrounding area to ensure comfort.

A small opening is created in the tooth to access the pulp chamber. The infected pulp tissue is removed, and the inside of the tooth is carefully cleaned and disinfected.

Once the canals are cleaned, they are filled and sealed. A dental crown may be recommended afterward to strengthen and protect the tooth.

 Is Root Canal Treatment Painful?

Many patients worry that root canal treatment will be painful. However, modern techniques and anesthesia make the procedure similar in comfort to receiving a filling.

Most patients experience relief from the pain caused by infection once the procedure is completed.

Saving Your Natural Tooth

One of the primary benefits of root canal treatment is that it allows patients to keep their natural tooth.

Saving the natural tooth helps maintain proper chewing function and prevents surrounding teeth from shifting.
